Alexander Tichonowitsch Gretschaninow

Alexander Tikhonovich Gretchaninoff (b. October 25, 1864 in Moscow, † January 3, 1956 in New York), short Alexander Gretchaninoff, was a Russian composer, pupil under Rimsky-Korsakov and main representative of the "Moscow School". This group of composers (also called "New Direction") strove to renew Russian sacred music by returning to ancient roots. At the same time, Gretchaninoff opened himself to the French style at the beginning of the 20th century, also moved to Paris in the twenties and later (to escape the turmoil of World War 2) To New York, but always remained true to his Soviet origins and wrote music from the USA for the moral edification of the Red Army.
Gretchaninoff's oeuvre includes five symphonies and drama music, three solo concertos, five operas, half a dozen sacred and a little secular vocal music, also two piano sonatas and other piano pieces (also for children) and ten works of chamber music.
