JSW - Jean Sibelius Sämtliche Werke (ed.: National Library of Finland and Sibelius Society of Finland)

Lemminkäinen's 'Happy End'

The four orchestral scores that come together in 'Lemminkäinen op. 22' can, with a little imagination, certainly be understood as a kind of program symphony. In this respect, the 'revision history' after the first performances and versions in 1896 and 1897 is striking: Sibelius soon revised two pieces, the then famous 'Swan of Tuonela' and 'Lemminkäinen zieht heimwärts' (op. 22 no. 4). He also has both scores printed, but keeps the other two pieces in a drawer for almost 40 years until he puts the finishing touches on them. Finally, in 1954, the entire cycle appears in the 'last hand version' desired by the composer. This happy ending is comprehensively documented in volume I/12b of the Sibelius Complete Edition.
