Bach's French Suites are among his most popular piano works and are also very often used in lessons. This was already the case at the time of their composition, so that today we know of an almost unmanageable number of copies from Bach's circle of students, which pass on many presumably authentic variants. The editor Ullrich Scheideler presents the complicated source situation in this revised Henle Urtext edition with exemplary clarity. Suite IV in E-flat major BWV 815 is taken from the complete volume HN593 and is excellently suited for teaching as a handy and inexpensive single edition. Not only the helpful fingering by Michael Schneidt contributes to this, but also the handling of the ornaments: Additional signs are transferred from the copies to the musical text and the preface explains the execution, so that this Urtext edition also offers an excellent introduction to Baroque ornamentation practice. Another plus of the edition: interesting deviations from the various sources are easily accessible in footnotes, and in the appendix it contains two additional movements - Praeludium and Gavotte II BWV 815a - which have survived in several copies. Summa summarum: An ideal introduction to the Bachian world of suites!
