Description:
The premiere of the German Requiem in 1867 represented a breakthrough for Johannes Brahms, then in his mid-thirties. The piece, about 90 minutes long, is the composer's first major work, and special focus is placed here on the chorus. Although the Deutsche Reqiuem is not a requiem in the conventional sense, it does deal with the basic ideas of one, death and mourning. This establishes a connection to Brahms' life at the time, for within the preceding years his patron Robert Schumann and Brahms' mother died.
