From arranger Ron Jones: 'This chart was created as a showcase for my all-star Infuence Jazz Orchestra made up of the top session and jazz players in L.A. I usually put it at the end of the second set when we play the jazz clubs. It is in a 24-Bar Blues form which really stretches out the blues and is designed to feature every section, and every player. You might wonder about the title Happier Than Sh*t Blues. I scored Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane's masterful animated satire on FOX for 15 years. Each episode included many cues that had to play a typical American Family. For those cues I made the music sort like an updated Leave It To Beaver, almost too perfect, too happy feel. As a way to sort of cope with doing that bag I started calling it a silly Happier than sh*t style. This helped our sessions stay fun and light and gave the players sort of a way to cope with this bag. When those players played in the Jazz Clubs we enjoyed reacting to this with our special blues that really showed off the talent and power of these great players. So I know it sounds gross especially to the overtly politically-correct, but it was intended with humor and a sense of fun. I won't go into total detail of each aspect. It plays down very straight-ahead with a medium, up tempo 158 BPM feel. It is like a Basie chart but on steroids. This chart is not super hard but it does challenge each section and gives everyone a featured moment. I like it because not only is the band fully played out, but the audience has enjoyed a really action packed and swinging chart. They are ready to go home, well feeling, extra happy.'
