The 'American' tone poems

Jean Sibelius wrote his last two tone poems Aallottaret op. 73 and Tapiola op. 112 as commissioned works for the USA. Aallottaret is the original Finnish title as found on the autograph. Behind it is the title 'Die Okeaniden' (The Okeanids), which also goes back to Sibelius and which Breitkopf & Härtel liked to prefix for the first printing in 1915, thus making the work famous. The complete edition also contains the previously unpublished early version of Aallottaret, which Sibelius hastily discarded shortly before the premiere. Compared to this, the genesis of Tapiola, Sibelius's last great symphonic poem, sounds relatively unspectacular: there was a lack of time during composition and printing, but no versions, one printed edition (by Breitkopf) and no subsequent revisions.
