The new Carus Urtext edition is based on the first printing of the score from 1800 as the main source. Haydn had it self-published, contrary to his other practices, in order to avoid unauthorized pre-publications and to present an optimally arranged 'last hand' edition.

On the basis of this original document, which has been compared with other relevant sources, Carus now offers a musical text at the latest scholarly level. The Critical Report informs about all important data concerning the edition in a practical, compact form. A detailed preface provides insight into the work's genesis, structure and reception, and sheds light on compositional and theological-spiritual-historical aspects.

In addition to the bilingual score (original German and English text by G. van Swieten), the piano reduction and choral score are each offered in two separate editions (German or English) in the interest of good readability.
