Written in 1736 shortly before the early death of the only 26-year-old Pergolesi, the 'Stabat mater' quickly attracted attention. The importance of the work was soon so great that none other than Johann Sebastian Bach performed a German version based on the 51st Psalm. In addition, numerous copies, prints, and arrangements attest to the enormous popularity of the work, which continues to this day through many performances and recordings.

For the present edition, a very early Neapolitan score, presumably based on the parts of the premiere, has also been juxtaposed with the autograph for the first time. The insights thus gained are incorporated into the musical text and explained in detail in the Critical Report.

- The famous work in a well-founded practical Urtext edition
- Bilingual preface (German/English)
- Well-playable piano reduction.
