With his Études-Tableaux, Rachmaninoff continued along the path that Chopin and Liszt had set with their concert etudes: the most demanding technical tasks are presented in the form of expressive character pieces. Rachmaninoff composed two cycles of originally nine Études-Tableaux each, but withdrew three pieces from Opus 33 shortly before it was printed. Some posthumous editions later reversed this decision; however, our edition follows exactly the arrangement with 6 pieces in Opus 33 as Rachmaninoff himself had determined for publication. We reproduce the two surviving Études that were not originally published in the appendix of our Urtext edition.
