Description:

  • Accompaniment: Piano
Jean-Louis Tulou, a pupil of Johann Georg Wunderlich, was one of the leading flutists of his time as a soloist at the opera of his native Paris and a professeur at the Conservatoire. His students included legendary flutists such as Henri Altès, Jules Demersseman, and Eugène Walckiers. He composed over 130 flute works and wrote a flute school. He forbade his pupils to play on the newly constructed flute by Theobald Böhm and made some changes to the traditional flute himself. It was not until he retired in 1856 that the Böhm flute as we know it today became established under his successor Dorus. The Air varié brilliant op. 98 was published as a joint edition by Brandus & Cie, Paris and Schott, Mainz. An alternative version of the accompaniment with chamber ensemble (2 violins, viola, violoncello, double bass, 2 oboes, 2 horns and 2 bassoons) is recorded only by Brandus.

Plate number 8873 / published in 1851.
