The Italian Giulio Briccialdi learned to play the flute mainly from his father. His virtuoso career began early and he received a position as flute teacher with the Count of Syracuse in Sicily. He traveled extensively and his playing drew raves from audiences and critics alike: he was the best flutist he had ever seen, Rockstro wrote in A Treatise on the Flute ('The only really good flute-player, that I have ever seen'). In 1871 Briccialdi received a professorship at the Florence Conservatory. In 1847 he learned about the newly constructed cylinder flute from Theobald Böhm, which he modified slightly himself. The double thumb key as a common addition to the original Böhm system went down in the history of flute making as the 'Biccialdi thumb key'. As a composer, in addition to an opera, he left behind mainly pieces for the flute that served the tastes of the time: Paraphrases, variation works, virtuoso pieces, a large number of which were published by Schott. In the original publication of the Allegro alla Spagnuola op. 69, measures 23 to 41 were forgotten in the score and printed only in the enclosed flute part. For this new edition the missing piano accompaniment could be reconstructed from the existing material.
