American flutist Henry Clay Wysham was born in Baltimore. He played solo flute in the Baltimore and Boston Symphony Orchestras. As an author, he published an essay 'The Evolution of the Boehm Flute' in 1898 and composed several pieces for flute, including his alto flute, with which he presents himself in the well-known photograph circa 1895 from Adolph Goldberg's Portraits and Biographies of Outstanding Flute Virtuosos, Dilettantes and Composers. He died in San Francisco. The Chanson du soir is the first piece from the cycle 'Trois morceaux poétiques'.
