Der tschechische Komponist Viktor Kalabis komponierte zahlreiche Instrumentalwerke - darunter fünf Sinfonien, mehrere Solokonzerte sowie Kammermusik. Seine Kompositionstechniken stehen dem Neoklassizismus nahe. Neben Anklängen an die Vorbilder Strawinsky, Bartók und Martinu zeigt sich aber ein konsequenter, vornehmlich bitonal organisierter Individualstil. Die ausdrucksstarke Fantasie für Oboe und Klavier entstand 1995 und gehört zu den wenigen Werken Kalabis', die den Klang der Oboe ins Zentrum stellen.
