Misa a Buenos Aires, better known as "Misatango", is the best-known work by Argentinian composer Martín Palmeri (*1965). Premiered in 1996, the piece is an unusual combination of the traditional Latin mass and the rhythms and harmonies of the Argentinian Tango Nuevo.

Here is a summary of the most important features of the work:

1. Musical fusion
Palmeri combines the sacred text of the Ordinarium Missae (the fixed parts of the Catholic mass) with the passionate and melancholy language of tango. He was largely inspired by the style of Astor Piazzolla. The aim was to merge the spiritual depth of the liturgy with the rhythmic energy and emotional expressiveness of the tango.

2. Instrumentation
The instrumentation is characteristic of a tango ensemble, supplemented by the classical choral instrumentation:
•Vocals: mezzo-soprano solo and mixed choir (SATB).
•Instruments: bandoneon (the heart of the tango), piano and string orchestra. The piano often takes on percussive tasks, while the bandoneon contributes the typically wistful melodies.

3. Structure
The Misatango follows the classical structure of the mass and consists of six movements:
1. Kyrie (bitter-sweet and rhythmically striking)
2. Gloria (powerful and dance-like)
3. Credo (dramatic and multi-faceted)
4. Sanctus (lyrical and floating)
5. Benedictus (often soloistic)
6. Agnus Dei (contemplative, with recourse to the Kyrie theme)

4. Significance and success
Although the work was premiered in Buenos Aires in 1996, it only gained massive popularity worldwide after 2013. A decisive moment was a performance in Rome in honor of Pope Francis (who himself comes from Buenos Aires). Since then, the Misatango has been one of the most frequently performed contemporary choral works and is regularly performed in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York or the Vienna Konzerthaus.

The "Misatango" is a gripping, emotional work that dissolves the boundaries between sacred music and world music and appeals to both lovers of classical choral music and tango enthusiasts.

O nata lux begann seine Existenz als ein Stück geschrieben für Männerstimmen im Rahmen eines Komplet-Gottesdienstes am Pembroke College in Cambridge. Dort versuchte Lapwood in ihrer Funktion als Director of Music ganz bewusst in jeden Gottesdienst Musik mit einzubringen, die von Frauen gemacht wird. Da sie feststellen musste, dass es es kaum Repertoire für tiefe Stimmen gibt, entschied sich sich, selbst etwas zu komponieren. Beim Schreiben des Anfangs und Endes des Stückes stellte sich die Komponistin das Licht einer Kerze vor, das aus dem Nichts kommt und dann langssam immer mehr zu einer konstant brennden Flamme wird. Der Klang dieser Abschnitte sollte gut gemischt und gleichmäßig ruhig sien, die Noten sollten bis zu ihrem vollen Wert gehalten werden, sodass es nie zu einem Abfallen des Klanges kommt. Bei ‘Jesu redemptor' liefern die unteren Stimmen ein Crescendo, insbesondere in den Vierteln. Es gibt Augenblicken, in denen das Stück ganz bewußt für die Bässe sehr hoch ist, wie im ‘Qui carne quondam' - dieses soltte aus dem Nichts kommen und zum vollen Klang im ‘nos membra confer effic' zurückkehren. Am Ende der Stückes verbirgt sich noch eine kleine Verneigung vor Tallis' Vertonung des O nata lux, dem ersten Chorstück, das Lapwood dirigiert hat! Eine gut zugängliche und lohnenede Motette von einem der Risings Stars in der Chorszene.

Karl Jenkins's uplifting and celebratory Te Deum (text in Latin), premiered in Nov 2008, is now available on sale as a vocal score. The work is moderate length (15 mins) and scored for strings, trumpets, percussion and organ, making it accessible to choirs of all sizes. Jenkins is the Patron of the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union, who commissioned the new work to celebrate the city's European Capital of Culture year.

The impressive song cycle "The Passing Of The Year" by British composer Jonathan Dove is a work for two mixed choirs and piano. In seven movements, Dove sets poems by renowned authors such as William Blake, Emily Dickinson and Alfred Lord Tennyson, which deal with the cycle of the seasons and the passing of time. Composed in 2000, the work captivates with its enormous rhythmic energy in the piano part as well as the sonorous, often double-choir arrangement of the vocal parts. From the spirit of optimism of spring to the melancholy of winter, Dove creates an atmospheric world of sound that impressively reflects both the beauty of nature and the transience of life.

The young Norwegian composer and musician Ola Gjeilo (*1978) is now one of the world's leading choral composers. His unmistakable style is characterized by catchiness and deep spirituality.

Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages is a new arrangement by Gjeilo of his Ubi Caritas, published in 2007. He has used the same musical material including the main theme of the first version. However, the character of this version is somewhat more cheerful and light-hearted.

Ubi Caritas II can be performed as a stand-alone work or in conjunction with the original version, e.g. as a prelude and postlude to frame a recording or concert program. In this case, the composer recommends concluding with Ubi Caritas II.

A tender shoot ist eine neue Vertonung eines deutschen Gedichtes aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, gedichtet von Otto Goldschmidt und von William Bartholomew im 19. Jahrhundert ins Englische übersetzt. Die Vertonung wurde von der Cathedral Commissions of Wells Cathedral im Jahr 2020 in Auftrag geben. In diesem weihnachtlichen Lied verwendet die Komponistin ausdrucksvolle Harmonien, um eine eingängige Melodie zu unterstreichen, mit der Christus als 'tender shoot' ('zärtlicher Spross') beschreiben wird, der der Wurzel des Jesse entsprang.

Faure was not drawn to compose a Requiem because of the death of a loved one, even though his mother had died during the early stages of composition and his father had passed away two years before. Faure's composition does not set his Reuiem to the standard liturgical text, instead adding a lyrical Pie Jesu and transcendent Paradisum, and omitting the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum - which, for most composers, are opportunities to demonstrate the dramatic possibilities available with the choral and orchestral forces. As a result the mood of the Requiem is relatively calm and peaceful and often referred to as a lullaby of death.

Faure's unconventional composition has become a firm favourite in the repertoire and available here is the vocal score, for Soloists and SATB Choir with Piano Accompaniment, as edited by Desmond Ratcliffe.
