Let yourself be lifted up with “You Raise Me Up”!
A song for eternity
Does the name Rolf Løvland mean anything to you? Or the group Secret Garden?
If not, you may be surprised to learn that you are familiar with a song by this Norwegian duo:
„You Raise Me Up“
If you're thinking of Josh Groban or the boy band Westlife, then you probably know the most famous of the over 500 cover versions of this song.
Originally written as an instrumental piece by the Norwegian Rolf Løvland and inspired by Irish tunes, a text was later added at Løvland's request from the pen of the Irish musician and lyricist Brendan Graham.
The fact that the lyrics should consist of just one verse and the repeated chorus is one of the wonders of “You Raise Me Up”, when you consider < i>how successful this title became:
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until You come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up to more than I can be
The “You” cleverly remains undefined, so that the song can serve as a message and consolation depending on the occasion (“You encourage me”) can be used to a good friend, as a love song or as a religious confession.
And so it is not surprising that there are a variety of different arrangements and notes of “You Raise Me Up”, which can be used instrumentally or with singing depending on the occasion (goosebumps at a concert, funeral service, Nobel Prize ceremony).
