David Garrett
David Christian Bongartz, better known as David Garrett (or the violin rebel) enriches Germany's musical culture landscape with one more likeable, dazzling personality. Born in Aachen in 1980, the son of a us ballet dancer and a German lawyer and violin maker learned to play the violin at the tender age of four and was already a prize winner in the Jugend Musiziert competition a year later.
David Garrett – the classical virtuoso
What followed was a picture-perfect career as a violinist:
The British Royal College of Music and the renowned Juillard School in New York are David Garrett's training grounds. Saschko Gawriloff and Itzhak Perlman are among his teachers. He makes music together with Claudio Abbado, is taken under the wing of Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 13, and receives the predicate "Greatest violinist of his generation" from Grandmaster Yehudi Menuhin – Garrett's status as a new star in the classical violin sky seems manifested.
But what makes David Garrett a „violin rebel“?
His irrepressible desire to play and his curiosity to discover new territory lead David Garrett to the idea of reconciling entertainment and serious music, pop and classical. Garrett develops a crossover concept, which is put into practice with the help of the Berlin concert promoter DEAG – Garrett's concept works! A wide audience opens up to the dynamic sound of his classical music interpretations. A veritable David Garrett fan community is growing up. David Garrett's desire to bring classical music closer to people who previously had fears of contact with this genre is fulfilled in a grandiose way!
And his reputation as „devil's violinist“?
...stems from the fact that David Garrett is able to play Rimsky-Korsakov's Hummelflug to play flawlessly in just 66.56 seconds – which, in addition to earning him a new nickname, also earns him an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.
But David Garrett does not consider music a sport or a competition; it is his wonderful means of expression, his aesthetic way of communicating and inspiring people with this „language“.
Try it! With David Garrett's two volumes for violin and piano „Best of Violin“ and „Alive - My Soundtrack“ you will experience firsthand Garrett's style of interpretations – by playing his pieces yourself!
