Anton Bruckner composed his 'Kleine Orchesterstücke' in 1862 as a first attempt in that field which later he was to make his very own: orchestral music. These four pieces are melodious little 'moments musicaux' (in the literal sense of the word) with still influences of the music of Schumann and Mendelssohn. There is not yet any Wagnerian influence in this music: Bruckner wasn't introduced to the scores of Richard Wagner until a few months after he had composed his 'Kleine Orchesterstücke'. From that moment he was deeply influenced by Wagner's music and he transformed in a composer of international stature and composed nine symphonies of great importance.

The 'Kleine Orchesterstücke' are: 'March', 'Moderato', 'Allegro non troppo' and 'Andante con moto'. Dutch arranger Marc Koninkx transcribed the first movement, 'March in d-minor', for Symphonic Band.
