Norway's fjords meet New York's Hudson River! Sheet music by Ola Gjeilo

Ola Gjeilo (born May 5, 1978 in Skui, Norway), belongs to a young generation of composers who combine harmonic simplicity with complex structures to create a polyphonic euphony in choral music.
Techniques such as cluster (overlapping carpets of sound), slight disharmony due to halftone-frictions in long delays and overstays with pleasant resolutions, repetitive rhythmic figures of minimal music in the accompanying instruments, all of this serves to create a dense sound, which at the same time offers a wonderful breadth. The vastness of the Norwegian landscape? We do not know if and how many impressions Ola Gjelo took with him from his homeland, the Akerhus region (around Oslo) to New York (his new home). But titles like “Sunrise Mass”  and “Northern Lights”  give an idea of what might have touched or shaped the Juillard School graduate.

With all their easiness and tonal simplicity, one should not be fooled by the fact that Gjeilo's compositions are complex, often eight or more than four-part choral settings that only work if a choir has absolutely secure intonation and dynamics. Only then does the real strength of Gjeilo's music come to the fore: the opportunity to let the listener touch your innermost being, or - as the german saying goes - “to strike a chord in a self”.

That Ola Gjeilo is all about the “big picture” is also in his piece “Song Of The Universal”  clear, a composition for divided four-part choir, piano and string orchestra on a text by Walt Whitman. The publisher of Gjeilo's works Walton Music  writes: “Walt Whitman's unabashed optimism, exuberance and unwavering confidence in our deeper humanity is beautifully portrayed through music in Gjeilo's setting of excerpts of the poem "Song of the Universal." ”

Yes! Ola Gjeilo has also made a name for himself as a pianist and composer of piano music. There is Ola Gjeilo's compositions for piano also available in sheet music editions.
Just as Antonín Dvořák processed his impressions of his stay in the USA in his 9th symphony From the New World, Ola Gjeilo has also made his mark with his new domicile New York City and released a lyrical Cross-Over album in 2007 (= mixing different style elements) called Stone Rose . His connection to the “City That Never Sleeps” and the Hudson River comes to the fore in the five lyrical pieces expression.
