A text-critical edition 'according to the sources' of the work first published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1885.

The new edition is based on the autograph and contemporary voice material as authentic sources.

This key work offers a convoluted (and at the same time incomplete) source material. The autograph is lost.

As with the other Beethoven reissues by Clive Brown and Peter Hauschild, the editor does not mechanically align the often very different indications in the sources for the 4th Symphony.

Hauschild's new edition is based on all important primary sources: autograph, first printing of parts, score copies supervised by Beethoven, and finally the first printing of the score.
