Description:
Disperse was commissioned by the Western Albemarle High School Big Band in Charlottesville, VA, and was written to introduce public school students to the language of composer/percussionist John Hollenbeck. The vibes, piano, guitar, and bass all utilize extensive written lines. The drum grooves modulate from a syncopated, funky feel to straight ahead swing, a smoother 'house' beat, and a contemporary swing feel that features the drummer soloing over ensemble figures. All of the wind instruments have fairly contrapuntal, independent lines. Saxes: A/A/T/T/B; flute; five trumpets; four trombones, RS: vibes/p/g/b/d. Lead trumpet: written C. Solo changes available for alto sax, trumpet, and piano.
