This is a wonderful medium tempo composition that alternates between 3/4 swing and 9/8 afro-Cuban. Arranged by Canadian composer/arranger Dean McNeill this piece features either a solo guitarist or solo trombonist throughout as well as a wonderful tutti horn ensemble section. This tutti section works very well with or without rhythm section accompaniment. For Sonny was composed by acclaimed Canadian jazz guitarist Mike Rud who dedicated the piece to Canadian jazz guitar legend Sonny Greenwich. 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 bari, 4 trumpets/flugels, 4 trombones, guitar (optional), piano, bass drums, plus either the solo guitar or solo trombone. Top lead trumpet note is written 'D'. Chord changes are fairly 'straight ahead' and wonderful to improvise over.
