Commissioned by the Westwinds Jazz Orchestra in Calgary, Gozar is a high-energy chart with a 12/8 Afro-Cuban feel. Starting with open solo space for percussion or drumset, the bass enters with an ostinato that sets up the melody. The solo changes are written for trombone, but the chart lends itself easily to any soloist. After the solo section, the ensemble returns with a development-type section, followed by a brief return to the melody. An ostinato pattern rounds out the tune, completed by a surprising soft ending.
