Description:
Commissioned for the Waukee (Iowa) High School Jazz Ensemble I, this piece is written on Monk's Epistrophy changes. The groove is a modified baion feel with occasional swing. Piano and Vibes (optional) carry the melody at the start, although Rhodes piano is really the optimal color. The solo section is written for piano, but could be opened up for anyone in the band. An exciting development section leads to a rhythm section breakdown section upon which is built 3 layers of counterpoint. A short piano solo interjection leads us back to a partial recap of the tune with a brief coda section. Modest brass ranges (lead trumpet touches D once; lead trombone to A).Soloist - piano (or anyone). No doubles..5,4,4,G,P,B,D, Optl. vibes.
