Description:
Under the Influence is an up-tempo 'burning' swing tune and was originally commissioned by the TCU Jazz Band under the direction (and 'influence') of Curtis Wilson. The opening main theme features the brass section in a 'psuedo - acapella' brass chorale and focuses on some tight harmonic voicings, therefore precise intonation and rhythmic timing should be emphasized. The secondary theme is a duet with the fifth trumpet and first tenor evolving to an ensemble interlude that leads to an open tenor solo. After the tenor solo, a rather demanding saxophone soli followed by a shout chorus resolves to a recap of the secondary theme duet. Lead trumpet high note is concert D. Due to it's tight harmonic voicings, technically demanding saxophone work and fast tempo, it should be considered a moderately advanced piece and is best suited for a band with a 'locked-in' rhythm section.5/5/4/g/p/b/d. Medium Difficult.
