Description:
Richard Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen" is still a challenge 150 years after the premiere of the entire cycle. This volume invites readers to engage with the work from new perspectives. It is deliberately aimed at a wider readership beyond the universities.
In addition to texts on the "Ring", there are others on Wagner's ideological position, on the role of Goethe's world drama "Faust", on religion and utopia and on questions of existence in exile. These are trenchant essays that focus on Wagner's influence through the Vormärz and revolution, not so much on the "break" between early and late Wagner that was later claimed but cannot really be proven. Instead, Hegel's concept of "Aufhebung" is used to bridge the gap between revolution, failure and utopia. The focus is always on Wagner's comprehensive concept of music and its significance for the concrete nature of the scores.
