Description:
This volume sheds light on various aspects of Gabriel Fauré's (1845–1924) personality in pictures and photographs: the person in the circle of his relatives and friends, the musician with colleagues, and in the context of the places where he worked and his time.
Fauré was an attractive man with a strong charm and appeal. His physiognomy inspired many painters such as Eugène Baugnies, Paul Mathey, Antonio Argnani, Théo Van Rysselberghe, Ernest Laurent and Jacques-Émile Blanche; the most famous is certainly the oil painting by his British friend John Singer Sargent. Also because of the public offices Fauré held, the number of photographs in which he is depicted is enormous: first organist at the Madeleine, he became a composition teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, then director of this institution and finally a member of the Institut de France.
The iconography also includes a selection of documents: manuscripts, posters, costumes, scene photos of his stage works and illustrated covers of original editions. And finally, photos taken by Fauré himself are also included.
Collected, edited and commented on by Jean-Michel Nectoux, who made Fauré the focus of his research over a period of more than 50 years, this illustrated book is a treasure trove for all those fascinated by the French music of the time. The book is published as a supplement to the Critical Complete Edition of Fauré's Works.
