Georg Goltermann stands in the "second row" in 19th century music history. In his time and among his contemporaries, he was popular and highly respected. But after his death in 1898, his fame faded very quickly. At best, some of his cello compositions are still used today in cello lessons at various levels. Of the eight cello concertos, these are concertos no. 1 to 3. The 4th concerto is also still played from time to time, as it can also be mastered by experienced amateurs. The other cello concertos and the many salon pieces have more or less disappeared into oblivion.
The discovery of documents from his life and work - he is considered the "silent one" among composers and conductors - now provides a good insight into his time and can turn previous judgments into positive ones. The orchestral works in particular reveal a mature compositional style that appears to be on a par with his better-known contemporaries.
