For schools ...
For religious education, the church is one of the most suitable spaces: Precisely not only as a place of worship or art-historical tourism, but as a speaking (and reflecting) space of yet another kind: what do all the strange and familiar things, the "holy furniture", the pictures on the walls and on the windows, the shapes and signs.... the spatial paths, sounds and - what do I say to them, what do I read into and out of them?
The church, as a history of the Christian faith and its people that has become stone, can reveal some of its secrets in a well-prepared tour - some things can be understood and others must be grasped.
The teaching units suggested in this book can help children learn that the dignified, solemn, sacred and meaningful does not lose any of its seriousness through the playful, relaxed, fun and humorous, but often reveals its meaning precisely through such interaction. Teachers learn that such excursions are not an unrealistic addition to an already overcrowded curriculum, but that numerous central goals and content can be achieved in a more sustainable way than would be possible in the classroom.
Because there are not always "productive" churches nearby for an excursion, many of the teaching modules, games, songs, dances etc. can also be carried out in the classroom. The ideas in this book can therefore not only be used to prepare for and follow up an excursion, but also offer suggestions for organizing "normal" religious education lessons.
