The changing interpretive lines of the great pianists of the past have always been in line with historical transformations concerning the social and ethical balances of an ever-changing public. Why does this no longer happen today? It is necessary to rediscover music on an anthropological, rather than cultural, level, but to do so it is essential to overcome the modernist tradition, according to which the pianist performs a priestly rite, for an audience now totally disinterested in acting as a mere witness.

Analyzing the different ways in which the great performers in history have handled the relationship between composer and audience, the author identifies and distinguishes by paradigms the various periods of piano performance, tracing with extraordinary lucidity those guidelines that can lead today's pianist into the period of postmodernism, toward the refounding of concert performance. A vision in which the pianist no longer relates exclusively to the author, but digests him or her in himself or herself, and then communicates an emotional content with which the audience can finally identify.
