Description:
The Schütz Yearbook 2021 has two focal points: Michael Praetorius and Schütz's "Cantiones sacrae". The texts on Praetorius focus on his aesthetics as reflected in the "Syntagma musicum" (Ivana Rentsch), the notation of his organ works (Jeffery Kite-Powell), the mysticism of Jesus in the early 17th century (Beate Agnes Schmidt), his ideas on performance practice in comparison with Schütz (Manfred Cordes) and the reception of his music in the 19th and early 20th centuries (Walter Werbeck). Ernst Koch locates the texts set to music by Schütz in the "Cantiones sacrae" in contemporary theology, while Stefan Michel looks at the dedicatee of the collection, Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg, and examines his function at the imperial court and his piety.
There are also four free contributions: Carl-Philipp Kaptain introduces father and son Andreas Oswald, who worked as organists in Weimar and Eisenach, Werner Breig enriches the discussion of Schütz's and Opitz's "Dafne", Johann Anselm Steiger looks at the text template for SWV 431 ("Christe fac ut sapiam", final piece from the "Twelve Sacred Songs"), and Andreas Erb presents new Schütz documents from the Chemnitz State Archives, which show how skillfully the composer also knew how to navigate the legal arena.
