Martin Zenck portrays Wolfgang Rihm, who died in 2024, as a cosmopolitan composer who uncompromisingly insisted on the cosmopolitan nature of music and the freedom of composing. He presents a broad presentation of Rihm's oeuvre: the songs, the instrumental music, the sacred works as well as the central "Nietzsche complex" and above all the music theater from the Artaud trilogy and the "Hamletmaschine" after Heiner Müller to the operas that Rihm wrote based on texts by Goethe ("Proserpina") and Hölderlin ("Oedipus").
In contrast to Rihm's sovereignty of interpretation and powerful language, this book finds its own methodological approach by giving space to the composer's self-interpretation, while at the same time opening up new horizons of understanding for Rihm's work. To this end, perspectives from theater and literary studies, philosophical and production-aesthetic approaches as well as musical analysis and the examination of performances and recordings are used.
The book focuses on the dialog between the composer and his interpreter Martin Zenck: the search for dimensions of meaning within the reception, for a "surplus of meaning" according to Rihm's maxim that "the work always knows more than the author".
Martin Zenck is a retired professor at the Institute for Music Research at the University of Würzburg with a focus on new music and aesthetics. In 2013, he received the Hans Zender Music Prize for musicological journalism and held a visiting professorship at the University of Chicago in the same year. In 2017 he was a Guest Fellow at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles. He is the author of groundbreaking books on Pierre Boulez (2017) and the exiled composer and pianist Eduard Steuermann (2022, together with Volker Rülke).
