Description:
The Swiss couple Heinrich and Cécile Däniker-Haller lived in Rio de Janeiro from 1828 to 1852. They were not only wealthy merchants and cosmopolitans, but also enthusiastic music lovers and left behind numerous documents about their domestic music activities in Brazil and - after their return to Zurich - in Switzerland. The letters and diaries in particular represent a hitherto unexplored source for investigating the practice and repertoire of the domestic music of foreign families in Rio de Janeiro and comparing it with domestic music in Zurich.
Not least, the analysis of these sources illustrates the difference between music-making in the intimate and informal atmosphere of house music and the well-prepared and rehearsed performances in the semi-public setting of the musical salon - but also the striking difference between the repertoires that were performed by the same dilettantes at these social occasions.
