Description:
Composed in 2024 for the River City Youth Brass Band A Pittsburgh Prelude and Dance was written specifically for young brass players. Commissioned by the River City Youth Brass Band, the work provides a musically engaging and educational experience for young ensembles. It begins with an expressive, powerful prelude followed by a lively dance with upbeat rhythms and a memorable melody. The composition poses certain challenges, but deliberately remains within the bounds of what is feasible for young musicians. Particular attention was paid to the range of notes - for example, the lower octave in the E flat soprano cornet can be played without any problems if the high register is too difficult. The piece is intended both as educational repertoire and as an entertaining concert number for both the players and the audience. I hope you enjoy my work! James Gourlay
