Description:
The Carnival of the Animals (French: Le Carnaval des Animaux) is a humorous musical suite in 14 movements, including "The Swan," by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns. Given the incredible diversity and depth of his compositional output, it is perhaps not surprising that Saint-Saëns was annoyed that this particular small, entertaining work would become his most famous. With a duration of about 25 minutes, the work was originally composed for a private performance featuring two pianos and a chamber ensemble. During his lifetime, Saint-Saëns forbade public performances, as he feared the humorous nature of the piece might damage his reputation as a serious composer. The suite was published in 1922, a year after his death. The first public performance that same year was received with great enthusiasm, and to this day, the work remains one of his most popular compositions. The concluding march evokes a cheerful circus parade, in which numerous themes from the previous movements are revisited—including the donkeys’ characteristic "I-Ah"!
