Description:
My Lord, What a Morning is a spiritual with a call-and-response structure, as well as verses and a chorus. Like many spirituals, the lyrics do not have a single author or composer; rather, they were likely written collaboratively. Many spirituals were written by enslaved people, but "My Lord, What a Morning" was most likely composed by free Black people in a North American city. An early version was published in 1801 by Richard Allen in Philadelphia. The lyrics of the spiritual refer to numerous biblical passages, from the shooting stars in Revelation and the Gospel of Matthew to the trumpet blasts in 1 Corinthians and 1 Thessalonians.
