The story of the poet and musician Orpheus and his passionate love for the beautiful Eurydice, the guardian nymph of the woods, is one of the most striking in Greek mythology. When Eurydice dies from a snake bite, Orpheus follows her, wailing, into the realm of the dead. The sound of his lyre is said to enchant Cerberus (the dog that guards the entrance to the underworld) and the Maenads (underworld creatures) before he pleads with Hades and Persephone, the rulers of the underworld, to let him return to the upper world with Eurydice. Hades sets one condition: Orpheus must not turn around to look at Eurydice or speak to her until they have reached the light of day. Orpheus breaks the ban, and his beloved vanishes from him forever into the realm of the dead.
