Sand and Stars chronicles the journey of pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry as he tried to break the record for a flight from Paris to Saigon. The journey began as planned, but ended prematurely in the middle of the Sahara with a broken plane and the rescue of the pilot and his on-board mechanic just in time. The six-part, colourful piece alternates between a mysterious mood, the deafening noise of a crashing plane and the liveliness of an Arabian dance, punctuated by cornet and euphonium solos, before ending with a breathtaking musical fireworks display.
