This piece, which is familiar to many schoolchildren, is arranged with a limited instrumentation, suitable also for smaller bands. It works well with as few as cornet 1&2, flugel or Eb horn 1, Eb horn 2 and one of the parts baritone/trombone/tuba. The piece is also well suited for a band with several percussionists, as there are 4 parts written for this section. However, it can also function nicely with few, or even no, percussion players.
There are melodic lines in most instrument groups, giving everyone some enjoyable passages beyond accompaniment playing. The chorus has a light and cheerful character, while the verses are somewhat more legato.
