Description:
This work was commissioned by the South Derbyshire Music Center as a tribute to its founder, Philip. For several decades, his dedicated leadership provided young people with access to musical education and the opportunity to make music at a high level. "Spean" was his favorite Christmas chorale, and when plans were made to compose a piece in his honor, this was the obvious choice for everyone. At the letter "D," a descant by Sara Kimber is heard, which was written at Philip’s request. The music is by Frederick Bridge (1844–1924) and is usually set to the following words: Brightest and best of the sons of the morning, Illuminate our darkness and grant us Your help; Star of the East, adorning the horizon, lead us to the place where our divine Savior rests as a child.
