To Heights Above was composed for the University of Salford Brass Band at the request of Dr. Brett Baker. Writing for a university band was, in many ways, an extremely liberating experience and encouraged me to return to a much freer compositional style, similar to the one I had cultivated during my carefree student days at music college. The work was composed during a particularly difficult period in my life and expresses some of the anxiety and frustration I felt at the time, particularly through tonal ambiguity and tension-filled melodic intervals. I was inspired by the expressive words of the gospel song that accompany the melody, upon which a series of rhapsodic variations is based. Although the work is not explicitly programmatic, it deliberately seeks to convey an atmosphere of outer space, weightlessness, and timelessness. At the heart of the work is the promise that, even in the most difficult circumstances of life, Jesus Himself has come in grace and mercy to lift us up to higher realms. Now on a higher plane I dwell, And with my soul I know 'tis well, Yet how or why, I cannot tell, He should have lifted me. Text: Charlotte G. Homer – Music: Charles H. Gabriel. Performance Notes: The work contains passages for muted horns and tubas. The use of mutes is desirable but not mandatory. At the letter M, the score instructs the performer to play with random crescendos and diminuendos, preferably within the dynamic range of pp to mp. The music should have an improvisational character.
