Description:
Variations on an Enclosure is a work loosely inspired by the English composers Derek Bourgeois and Gustav Holst. The essential principle of the piece can be traced back to a single four-note cell that emerged from my explorations of so-called enclosures in jazz melody and improvisation. An enclosure is the technique of selecting a chord tone - the so-called "target tone" - and introducing it with the surrounding notes above and below. I constructed an enclosure around the chord tone C and used various inversions, retrogrades and rearrangements to develop the melodic and harmonic material for my variations. The four-note enclosure never appears in its original form, leaving the "theme" hidden - a musical enigma in the background.vibrant orchestral breath that takes musicians and listeners on an exciting journey.
