This volume documents the chorale choral movements and choral cantatas that Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed between 1827 and 1832. For a long time, this group of eight works was one of the least known parts of his oeuvre. Mendelssohn wrote these works, which are generally referred to as "choral cantatas" in a way that is as catchy as it is problematic, in a limited but biographically important period. He was 18 when he composed the first and 23 when he composed the last. The chorale arrangements "Christe, du Lamm Gottes" MWV A 5, "Jesu, meine Freude" MWV A 6 and "Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten" MWV A 7 were composed while he was still in Berlin in 1829. Five further, predominantly multi-movement works then followed between 1830 and 1832 on his great educational journey: "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" MWV A 8, "Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her" MWV A 10, "Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich" MWV A 11, "Wir glauben all an einen Gott" MWV A 12 and finally "Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein" MWV A 13. In contrast to his five psalm cantatas, which were essentially composed later and four of which were printed, the composer only had "Verleih uns Frieden" published from the chorale arrangements. This is a work that is still popular today and occupies a unique position within the group insofar as it is based on a chorale textually but not musically.
