Die aus der antiken Mythologie stammende Geschichte um die Nymphe Daphne, die zu einem immer blühenden Lorbeerbaum verwandelt wird, wurde bereits vielfach in Kunst, Musik und Literatur aufgenommen. In Strauss' Opernadaption findet sich das tragische Moment im Tod Leukippos', Daphnes Jugendfreund, wieder. Ihre Liebe zu ihm erkennt sie erst im Moment seines durch Apollos Pfeil bewirkten Todes. Schuldbewusst erfleht Apollo von Zeus, ihm Daphne in Gestalt eines immergrünen Lorbeerbaumes wiederzugeben, aus dessen Zweigen noch ganz zart ihre Stimme ertönt ('Ich komme, grünende Brüder').
