Description:
Mozart wrote his one-act opera "Der Schauspieldirektor" in the spring of 1786, commissioned by Emperor Joseph II on the occasion of a visit to Vienna by the Governor General of the Netherlands. The guests were to be musically entertained with a short German and an Italian comedy at a party in Schönbrunn, which had been arranged at short notice. The composers chosen were Mozart and Salieri. Both composers take aim at the theatrical practice of the time, with the "Schauspieldirektor", whose text comes from the librettist of the Abduction from the Seraglio, focusing on the vanity of opera singers and the unseriousness of many a traveling acting troupe. / Thanks to the arrangement for chamber orchestra by U. Stäuble (Carus 57.007/00), it is now possible to perform the work on a smaller scale.
