Similar to the Haydn and Vierne brothers, Joseph Franck is today overshadowed by his older brother César. Yet during his lifetime, the Parisian organist, pianist, violinist and composer was hardly inferior to his brother in terms of popularity, if only in terms of his catalog of around 200 widely performed organ, piano, orchestral, chamber and choral compositions. From this oeuvre, we present a long out-of-print mass for two equal voices (SA or TB) and organ. The work reflects the composer's ability to create a mass with a great richness of expression and sound despite its low technical demands ('facile'): Memorable melodic lines, largely parallel voice parts, early Romantic harmony and an effective dramaturgy recommend the work for today's liturgical use, even 150 years after its composition. An attractive alternative in the mass repertoire for choirs singing in unison!
