Description:
The composition of Johannes Brahms' "13 Canons op. 113" cannot be precisely dated. However, it can be assumed that the individual canons were composed between 1859 and 1863 and on various occasions. Various counterpoint studies from this period should be mentioned, to which the canon fits well as a special form of counterpoint. Brahms' work with the newly founded Hamburg Women's Choir, in whose part books some of the canons can also be found, also dates from these years. The "innocent, small, amorous verses, which should be sung easily and gladly by pretty girls" were first published as a collection in 1891, for which Brahms received the handsome fee of 6000 marks. In addition to texts by well-known poets, he also made use of folk songs.
