Description:
This well-known Scottish folk song presents the image of a Scottish Pipe band in formal Scottish dress with their tartans, kilts and all. The Bonnie Charlie mentioned in the text is of course a reference to Prince Charles Edward Stuart, whose efforts to reclaim the Scottish throne ended in disaster. The 1745 rebellion was followed by a period of widespread repression of Scottish culture, including music and the wearing of the kilt.
