Composer Mona Rasenberger based this work on Heinrich Heine’s poem "The Butterfly Is in Love with the Rose." She focuses on the central question-and-answer exchange: "The butterfly is in love!—With whom?—With the rose!" At first, we hear the fluttering of the butterfly’s wings as it flies along its path in delicate vocalizations. In the middle of the poem, a very human aspect emerges: When you hear about two people newly in love, you naturally want to know more; a murmur begins ("But who is the rose in love with? I’d really love to know!"). But the rose refuses to be pinned down ("But I love you all"); so the whispering subsides once more, and the butterfly flutters away just as it had come. A dynamic, rhythmically challenging work for women’s choirs.
