Description:
During his second stay in England in 1794, Joseph Haydn also met the Rector of Westbourne, the Reverend William Dechair Tattersall. He tried to persuade Haydn to support his plan to improve congregational singing, or more precisely psalm singing, in English parishes. Joseph Haydn's fame and degree of popularity in England had been established during his first visit in 1791/1792, and now, at the height of his fame, he was met with benevolent sympathy everywhere.
In these six English psalms, Haydn's flair for memorable, catchy melody, good singable voice leading, tense harmony, balanced form and meaningful treatment of the text is shown to full advantage.
