Choralkantate - Schon während Mendelssohns Lehrjahren bei Zelter hatte die Bearbeitung von Chorälen eine große Rolle gespielt, und die Beschäftigung mit dem evangelischen Choral zieht sich auch später durch sein sinfonisches und oratorisches Schaffen. Die im Zusammenhang mit der Wiederaufführung der Matthäuspassion (1829) besonders intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk Bachs führte zu einer Reihe von Kantaten über bekannte Choralweisen, die nicht nur für Kantatengottesdienste eine große Bereicherung dar stellen.
